Workplace instruction card for hazardous substances
Working with (hazardous) substances involves different types of risks, which can have very serious short- or long-term consequences. A workplace instruction card (WIC) makes workers aware of these risks and shows the measures they should take to prevent or deal with accidents. What is a WIC and what information can you find on it?
What is a workplace instruction card?
A workplace instruction card (WIK) is a practical translation of a safety data sheet (SDS), which is often technical and difficult to understand. The WIK converts the most important information from a MSDS into concrete and clear instructions for workers. This way, employees know exactly what hazards exist, whether and what protective equipment is needed and what to do in case of an emergency.
What information does a workplace instruction card contain?
A workplace instruction card contains specific health and safety information related to working with hazardous substances or performing high-risk activities. The main data you can find on a workplace instruction card are:
- CAS number and product name
- Hazard properties (such as GHS hazard pictograms, H phrases, and P phrases)
- Preventive measures (such as personal protective equipment)
- First aid measures (what to do in case of skin, eye, inhalation or ingestion contact)
- Emergency measures (e.g. fire-fighting equipment)
- Environmental, storage, and transport instructions
This information helps employees handle substances and work activities in the workplace in a safe way and contributes to complying with legal obligations on occupational safety.
